John’s Journal, Issue #9 – Bar Code Scanning and Wireless Technology

John’s Journal is a newsletter to provide SMARTSystem™ Users with the latest software highlights and solutions to improve business operations.

The SMART Mobile Suite is a collection of software programs for specific types of wireless bar code scanning devices that extend the functionality of the SMARTSystem Software.  The Motorola MC-3190 is the commonly used wireless barcode scanning computer that operates Windows Mobile 6 and the SMART Mobile programs.

The software programs that comprise the SMART Mobile Suite are:

  • SMART Mobile Suite Menu
  • SMARTInventory Receiving
  • SMARTScan
  • SMARTPrice Check
  • SMARTShip

The SMART Mobile Suite Menu looks like this:

The SMARTInventory Receiving program collects the scanned SKUs until the user taps the “Upload Data” button.  The data is uploaded wirelessly to the Server application that combines all of the like SKUs to create a single receiving record for each product representing the Total Quantity scanned.

The SMARTScan program is used for counting Physical Inventory by scanning the SKU, accumulating physical counts and locations. When completed the device is cradled to upload the scanned data directly to our Inventory Reconciliation application in SMARTSystem.

The SMARTPrice Check program provides real time price lookups and the ability to print price labels directly from the MC-3190 device.  Simply scan the product SKU with the device and the system wirelessly communicates with the SMARTSystem database to return the Product Code, Product Description, Quantity On-Hand, Price and UPC Code instantly.  Once a product has been looked up, the user can choose to print labels directly to the Label Printer, with or without Prices.

The SMARTShip program will scan the SKU on boxes staged to load on a truck. When scanning is completed the user taps the “Upload Data” button to reconcile each scanned order and verify fulfilled orders or identify incomplete orders.

In all cases, the product SKU can be the SMARTSystem Product Code, UPC, or GTIN Code.

John’s Journal, Issue #8 – About Inventory Control

John’s Journal is a weekly newsletter to provide SMARTSystem™ Users with the latest software highlights and solutions to improve their business operations.

You can achieve a perfect inventory without overbuying by allocating pre-book sales to purchase orders.

The Allocation of products will maintain the integrity of the orders without having to break orders up to adjust for “this and that.”  As you know, all types of changes usually occur when products are received.  By using our Allocation feature less changes are needed to fulfill orders. Here is one example of how to use the Allocation feature:

There is no other System that will keep everything in balance:  allocate product for the holidays, receive a large number of products, keep up with your current business activity, customers ordering on the website using SMARTSite, the inventory stays in-balance and you can still go home at a reasonable time each night because you know your inventory is under control. Also, with less stress you can treat your customers better.

John’s Journal is a newsletter to provide SMARTSystem™ Users with the latest software highlights and solutions to improve  business operations.

Quality service and effective solutions by Floral Computer Systems is one of the keys to your success and in turn to our success.

Here is a true story. On Saturday, January 21st at 12 noon, I received a call from a near despondent client telling me that late Friday their Server died.  A major electrical problem in conjunction with a failed UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) caused their Server to “die” with all their holiday information lost.  A quick assessment of the situation and efficient handling of the problem by the Floral Computer Systems team resulted in the wholesaler being operational again by 6 pm that day.  In 6 hours we went from a completely failed Server and a bleak outlook for the next week, to a new Server and SMARTSystem operational with data fully recovered.

The purpose of sharing this story is to remind each owner and manager that they need to verify that their UPS battery backup systems are working properly and that daily data backups are taking place to an external storage device.  Call us if  you need assistance to verify these two vital backup functions.

The latest feedback from a wholesaler using the new SMARTSite™ is:

“It’s breathing new life into our business, old customers are being revived with SMARTSite as our salesperson on standby 24 hours a day, 7 days a week that never gets tired, never has a bad day, never gets burnt out, doesn’t cheat,  doesn’t steal from you, and it sells your flowers for the price you want.  By the way, internet sales has made it easier to clean out our cooler by the end of the week”.

Our goal is to provide you with software tools to make your job easier and improve your success with quality service delivered quickly.

Sincerely, John Henderson

How to get an update if you missed the auto-prompt
